Background of the study
Digital platforms provide fertile ground for morphosyntactic innovation as users adapt language to suit new communicative environments. Instagram, a visual-centric platform, encourages creativity not only in imagery but also in the accompanying text, known as captions. In Nigeria, Instagram captions often feature inventive word formations, unconventional syntax, and hybrid morphological structures that diverge from traditional linguistic norms (Ibrahim, 2023). Users blend local dialects with global trends, generating neologisms, abbreviations, and playful modifications that reflect their cultural identity and digital savvy. The interactive nature of Instagram, where content is shared, commented on, and reshared, further accelerates these innovations. This study focuses on assessing digital morphosyntactic innovation in Nigerian Instagram captions, exploring how platform affordances and socio-cultural dynamics drive language change. By analyzing a corpus of captions, the research aims to document emergent linguistic patterns and evaluate their broader implications for language evolution in digital spaces (Okafor, 2024). The study highlights the creative potential of digital media in redefining language structures and offers insights into the future trajectory of morphosyntactic practices in Nigeria (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although digital morphosyntactic innovation is evident in Nigerian Instagram captions, research on this phenomenon remains sparse. Existing studies often focus on visual elements while neglecting the linguistic creativity embedded in textual captions (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how digital affordances contribute to novel language forms and their subsequent impact on traditional grammatical structures. Without systematic analysis, the processes driving morphosyntactic innovation in online contexts remain poorly understood, hindering theoretical developments in digital linguistics (Ibrahim, 2023).
