Background of the study
Digital visual content has redefined language usage by blending images with text, and this interplay is especially prominent on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Nigerian users often create captions that accompany visual media, resulting in morphological innovations as traditional language is adapted to suit digital aesthetics (Okafor, 2024). Instagram captions tend to be reflective and narrative-driven, whereas TikTok captions are more dynamic and trend-oriented. Both platforms stimulate creative word formation through abbreviations, neologisms, and unconventional syntax that challenge conventional morphology (Ibrahim, 2023). This study compares morphological innovations in captions on Instagram and TikTok, exploring how visual content influences language use and shapes new word forms. It also examines the role of cultural influences and digital affordances in driving these linguistic changes (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although visual content is integral to digital platforms, the effect of such content on morphological innovation remains underexplored. Existing research has predominantly focused on visual aesthetics, neglecting the linguistic adaptations that occur in accompanying captions (Chukwu, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how digital visual narratives contribute to the evolution of morphology. Without a comparative study between platforms like Instagram and TikTok, the nuanced differences in language innovation driven by visual media are inadequately addressed (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of digital visual content on morphological innovation in Nigerian social media. The findings will inform linguists and digital media scholars about the interplay between visual elements and language, contributing to broader insights on digital language evolution (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on caption texts accompanying visual content on Instagram and TikTok among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms or offline practices.
