Background of the study
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used indicator of nutritional status and health risk, influenced by various lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and socioeconomic conditions. In Enugu North Local Government Area, rapid urbanization and lifestyle changes have led to a significant shift in BMI distribution among residents (Chukwu, 2023). Traditional lifestyles characterized by active labor and balanced diets are increasingly being replaced by sedentary behaviors and high-calorie diets, resulting in a surge in obesity and related health complications. Contemporary research has established a strong correlation between lifestyle patterns and BMI, underscoring the need for public health interventions to address the emerging epidemic (Nnamdi, 2024). This study investigates the relationship between BMI and lifestyle patterns among residents, aiming to identify critical factors that contribute to weight variations and propose strategies for promoting healthier living environments (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the problem
The rising prevalence of obesity and related health issues in Enugu North is a pressing concern, primarily driven by shifts in lifestyle patterns such as poor dietary habits and reduced physical activity. This change in lifestyle is directly affecting residents’ BMI, contributing to increased health risks and socioeconomic burdens. The study aims to investigate the extent of the relationship between BMI and lifestyle patterns, identifying key determinants that could inform targeted public health interventions (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To examine the relationship between BMI and lifestyle patterns.
To identify key lifestyle factors influencing BMI.
To propose interventions to promote healthier lifestyle practices.
Research questions
How do lifestyle patterns influence BMI among residents of Enugu North?
What are the key lifestyle determinants affecting BMI?
What interventions can improve lifestyle habits and reduce obesity rates?
Research Hypotheses
Lifestyle patterns significantly affect BMI.
Poor dietary habits and physical inactivity are major determinants of increased BMI.
Effective interventions can improve lifestyle practices and lower BMI.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the critical relationship between lifestyle patterns and BMI, offering insights essential for public health planning. Its findings will help develop targeted interventions to promote healthier living among residents of Enugu North (Nnamdi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the relationship between BMI and lifestyle patterns among residents of Enugu North Local Government Area and does not extend to other regions or health indicators.
