Background of the Study
Efik political speeches in Calabar are a critical arena for the exercise of power, persuasion, and cultural articulation. Discourse markers, as linguistic devices that structure conversation, play an essential role in these speeches by signaling transitions, emphasizing key points, and organizing the flow of argumentation (Udofia, 2023). In the context of Efik political discourse, these markers contribute to the clarity and persuasiveness of the message, helping to align the speaker’s rhetoric with the expectations of diverse audiences. The usage of discourse markers in political speeches has been shown to impact the audience’s reception and comprehension, making them a valuable focus for linguistic and political analysis (Okon, 2024). Furthermore, the political landscape in Calabar, characterized by its multicultural dynamics and evolving political discourse, presents a unique opportunity to study how language is strategically used to mediate power relations and build consensus. This research explores the deployment of discourse markers in Efik political speeches, examining their functions and implications for political communication. By analyzing these markers, the study aims to offer insights into the rhetorical strategies that underpin effective political discourse in Calabar (Udofia, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of discourse markers in shaping effective political communication, there is a paucity of research focusing specifically on their use in Efik political speeches in Calabar. The limited scholarly attention to this area leaves a gap in understanding how these linguistic elements function within the unique cultural and political milieu of Calabar (Okon, 2024). Moreover, the rapid evolution of political discourse in the region necessitates an updated examination of how discourse markers contribute to message coherence and persuasive appeal. Without such research, it is challenging to develop a nuanced understanding of the interplay between language and political power in Efik contexts. This study seeks to fill this gap by critically assessing the role of discourse markers in structuring and enhancing political speeches.
