Background of the Study
School feeding programs have emerged as an essential strategy to boost student enrolment and retention, particularly in regions facing nutritional and economic challenges. In Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, these programs not only address hunger and malnutrition but also serve as incentives for parents to keep their children in school (Obi, 2023). By providing nutritious meals during school hours, feeding programs enhance students’ concentration, academic performance, and overall well-being (Egwu, 2024). Studies have demonstrated that school feeding initiatives contribute significantly to improved attendance rates and reduced dropout rates (Adeniran, 2025). However, challenges such as funding constraints, logistical issues, and sustainability concerns remain prevalent. As a result, the effectiveness of these programs in promoting long-term enrolment and retention needs careful evaluation. This study investigates the impact of school feeding programs in Yenagoa, exploring how nutritional support can serve as a catalyst for educational improvement and community development (Chukwu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of school feeding programs in Yenagoa Local Government Area, issues with funding, logistical challenges, and program sustainability have undermined their potential benefits. While these programs are designed to increase enrolment and retention, inconsistent implementation and inadequate resources have limited their impact. Consequently, many schools still struggle with low attendance and high dropout rates. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of school feeding programs in addressing these challenges and to propose recommendations for enhancing their sustainability (Okafor, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of school feeding programs in Yenagoa.
To assess the impact of these programs on student enrolment and retention.
To recommend measures for improving the sustainability and effectiveness of school feeding programs.
Research Questions
How are school feeding programs implemented in Yenagoa?
What is the impact of these programs on enrolment and retention rates?
What improvements can be made to ensure the sustainability of school feeding initiatives?
Research Hypotheses
H₁: School feeding programs significantly improve student enrolment.
H₂: There is a significant relationship between school feeding initiatives and student retention.
H₃: Improved program sustainability will further enhance enrolment and retention rates.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the role of school feeding programs in improving educational outcomes. The findings will inform government agencies and stakeholders on how to optimize these programs to boost student enrolment and retention (Eze, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating the impact of school feeding programs on student enrolment and retention in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. It does not cover other aspects of educational support or regions outside Yenagoa.
