Background of the Study
Moral education plays a crucial role in shaping ethical behavior and social responsibility among young learners. In secondary schools in Minna, Niger State, innovative teaching tools are needed to make moral education more engaging and relatable. Digital comics have emerged as a promising medium for this purpose by combining visual storytelling with moral narratives that capture students’ interest (Ibrahim, 2023). Through dynamic illustrations and interactive storylines, digital comics present moral dilemmas, ethical decision-making, and cultural values in a format that is both entertaining and educational. This medium allows educators to present abstract moral concepts in a concrete, visually stimulating manner. The use of digital comics in the classroom can stimulate critical thinking, encourage empathy, and facilitate discussions about right and wrong in real-world contexts (Chinwe, 2024). With the widespread availability of digital devices, these comics can be easily integrated into the curriculum, reaching a broad range of students and accommodating diverse learning styles. Recent educational research suggests that storytelling, particularly in a digital format, can significantly enhance retention and comprehension of complex moral lessons (Afolabi, 2024). The proposed study will analyze how digital comics can be used as an effective tool for teaching moral education, assess their impact on student engagement, and explore their potential to transform traditional moral instruction into a more interactive and impactful learning experience.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional methods of teaching moral education in secondary schools often rely on lectures and textbook readings, which may fail to capture students’ attention and foster deep ethical understanding. In Minna, many students find moral education abstract and disconnected from their daily experiences, leading to poor retention and minimal behavioral change (Ibrahim, 2023). Although digital comics offer an engaging alternative by combining visuals and narrative, their use in moral education remains underexplored. Challenges such as limited digital literacy among educators, insufficient locally relevant content, and the high cost of production hinder the effective implementation of digital comics in the classroom (Chinwe, 2024). Moreover, there is a lack of empirical data on the impact of digital comics on moral reasoning and student engagement. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of digital comics as a teaching tool for moral education, examining how they influence students’ ethical understanding and behavior. It will also identify barriers to the adoption of digital comics in the curriculum and propose strategies to overcome these challenges, ensuring that the medium not only entertains but also educates effectively (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study
• To evaluate the impact of digital comics on moral education in secondary schools.
• To measure changes in student engagement and ethical understanding after exposure to digital comics.
• To identify challenges and propose strategies for effective integration of digital comics in the curriculum.

Research Questions
• How do digital comics enhance students’ understanding of moral concepts?
• What improvements in ethical behavior and engagement are observed with digital comic usage?
• What obstacles impede the effective use of digital comics in moral education?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it demonstrates the potential of digital comics to revolutionize moral education by making ethical lessons engaging and relatable (Ibrahim, 2023). The findings will provide valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers in Minna, enabling the adoption of innovative, interactive tools that foster moral reasoning and social responsibility (Afolabi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to investigating the use of digital comics for teaching moral education in secondary schools in Minna, Niger State. It focuses exclusively on digital storytelling techniques and does not cover other teaching methods.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Comics: Illustrated narratives produced using digital tools that combine visuals and text to convey stories.

  • Moral Education: Instruction aimed at developing ethical values and social responsibility.
