Background of the study
Exam registration is a critical process in higher education that significantly impacts academic planning and student progression. In Lokoja LGA, Kogi State, traditional exam registration methods are often characterized by long queues, manual errors, and delayed processing, which adversely affect the overall academic experience. The integration of IoT‑based smart real‑time student exam registration systems offers an innovative solution to streamline this process by automating registration, ensuring data accuracy, and providing immediate feedback (Olayinka, 2023). These systems combine IoT devices, biometric authentication, and centralized databases to facilitate seamless, real‑time registration and record‑keeping (Ibrahim, 2024).
The digital transformation of exam registration processes is essential for reducing administrative burdens, enhancing transparency, and minimizing the risk of fraudulent activities. Real‑time registration not only improves operational efficiency but also allows academic administrators to manage exam logistics more effectively. The system’s ability to provide instant updates regarding registration status and exam schedules can significantly reduce student anxiety and improve overall satisfaction (Chinwe, 2023). Moreover, the data generated from these systems can be used for academic planning, resource allocation, and policy development, thus contributing to the broader educational framework in Lokoja LGA.
However, challenges such as high installation costs, data security concerns, and the need for robust digital infrastructure pose significant obstacles to the implementation of such systems (Adeniran, 2023). Additionally, ensuring compatibility with existing university systems and training personnel to manage the new technology are critical issues that must be addressed. Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of enhanced efficiency, reduced administrative errors, and improved student experience underscore the need for this research (Olayinka, 2023).
This study seeks to investigate the design and implementation challenges of IoT‑based smart real‑time exam registration systems in Lokoja LGA, with the aim of proposing a comprehensive framework that addresses technical, operational, and security issues while optimizing the registration process (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Exam registration in Lokoja LGA faces several challenges due to outdated manual processes, leading to inefficiencies, long queues, and frequent errors in student records. The current system, which relies heavily on paper‑based methods, is not only time‑consuming but also prone to inaccuracies that can affect student academic progress (Chinwe, 2023). This inefficiency has a cascading effect on exam scheduling, resource allocation, and overall academic administration. Additionally, the lack of real‑time data prevents timely interventions when issues arise, exacerbating administrative bottlenecks (Olayinka, 2023).
Furthermore, the absence of a centralized, automated system makes it difficult to maintain data integrity and security, leading to potential cases of fraud and manipulation in exam registration. The manual system also limits the ability of academic administrators to generate actionable insights for future planning. High operational costs, limited technical capacity, and resistance to change among staff further complicate the situation (Adeniran, 2023).
This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the current exam registration process and exploring the potential of an IoT‑based smart system to streamline and secure the process. The research will examine technical requirements, assess the integration challenges with existing systems, and evaluate user readiness for such a transformation. By identifying and analyzing these factors, the study intends to propose a robust framework that not only improves the efficiency and accuracy of exam registration but also enhances overall academic administration in Lokoja LGA (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To assess the limitations of the current manual exam registration system in Lokoja LGA.
