Background of the Study
Community pharmacies serve as an essential link in the healthcare system by providing accessible medication dispensing, counseling, and minor health services. In Kano State, these pharmacies often function as the first point of contact for patients, especially in areas where formal healthcare facilities are sparse. The integration of community pharmacies into the broader healthcare delivery system can enhance medication adherence, reduce the burden on hospitals, and facilitate preventive care through health education. With a growing population and evolving disease patterns, the role of community pharmacists in managing chronic conditions and promoting public health becomes even more critical. Recent studies indicate that pharmacies can contribute to improved patient outcomes by offering personalized advice and follow-up services (Adebayo, 2023; Musa & Ibrahim, 2024). However, challenges such as regulatory gaps, variable standards of practice, and limited integration with other healthcare providers may hinder their potential. This study will investigate how community pharmacies are currently positioned in Kano State, examine their contributions to healthcare delivery, and explore opportunities to strengthen their role within the health system.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread presence of community pharmacies in Kano State, their potential to improve healthcare delivery remains underutilized. Issues such as inconsistent service quality, limited professional oversight, and poor integration with the formal healthcare sector contribute to missed opportunities in promoting medication adherence and preventive health measures. Many residents, especially in peri-urban and rural areas, rely on these pharmacies for primary health advice; yet, the lack of standardized protocols and continuous professional training often leads to variable outcomes. This gap between the expected role of community pharmacies and their actual performance contributes to inefficiencies in healthcare delivery and limits the overall impact on public health. The absence of comprehensive data on their effectiveness further hinders the development of targeted interventions. This study aims to assess the current role of community pharmacies in Kano State, identify barriers to optimal service delivery, and propose strategies for enhancing their contribution to healthcare.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current functions and service quality of community pharmacies in Kano State.
2. To identify barriers that limit the effective integration of pharmacies into the broader healthcare system.
3. To recommend strategies for strengthening the role of community pharmacies in improving healthcare delivery.
Research Questions
1. What services do community pharmacies currently provide in Kano State?
2. What are the major challenges affecting their integration into the healthcare system?
3. How can policy and practice be improved to optimize their role?
Research Hypotheses
1. Enhanced integration of community pharmacies is associated with improved medication adherence.
2. Regulatory and training gaps significantly hinder the performance of community pharmacies.
3. Targeted interventions, such as standardized protocols, will improve healthcare outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on a representative sample of community pharmacies in urban and peri-urban areas of Kano State. Data will be gathered from surveys, interviews with pharmacy personnel, and analysis of service records. Limitations include potential reporting bias and variability in practice standards across locations.
