Background of the study
Digital literacy refers to the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate, and create information using a range of digital technologies. In the context of secondary education, digital literacy encompasses not only the technical skills needed to operate digital devices but also the ability to use these tools to access information, collaborate with peers, and engage in critical thinking and problem-solving (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). In Kano Municipal, Kano State, where there is increasing access to digital resources, fostering digital literacy among students is becoming essential for academic success and future employability.
Digital literacy has been linked to improved academic performance, as students who possess these skills are better able to engage with digital learning materials, participate in online discussions, and collaborate effectively with peers and teachers (Ogundele, 2024). However, despite the increasing emphasis on digital skills in education, many students in Kano Municipal still face challenges in developing adequate digital literacy, including limited access to technology and lack of proper training. This study will investigate the role of digital literacy in enhancing student performance in secondary schools in Kano Municipal, focusing on how digital skills contribute to students' academic achievements.
Statement of the problem
While digital literacy is crucial for improving student performance, secondary schools in Kano Municipal face challenges in promoting digital skills. Issues such as inadequate access to computers and internet services, lack of trained teachers, and limited exposure to digital learning resources may hinder the development of digital literacy among students. This study will examine how digital literacy influences academic performance in Kano Municipal's secondary schools and explore the challenges that impede its effective integration into education.

The study is limited to secondary schools in Kano Municipal, Kano State, and focuses on the role of digital literacy in academic performance. It does not include other local governments in Kano State or other aspects of digital education.
