Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Rural-urban migration is a significant demographic trend in many parts of Nigeria, where individuals move from rural areas to urban centers in search of better economic opportunities, improved living standards, and access to social services. Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State has seen an increasing influx of rural migrants seeking opportunities in the urbanized city. According to recent studies (Aliyu et al., 2023), this movement has led to rapid urbanization and an increase in the population density of urban areas, particularly in Lokoja. While rural-urban migration has its benefits, such as economic growth and cultural diversification, it has also been linked to an increase in urban crime rates. Migrants, often facing challenges like unemployment, poor housing conditions, and social integration issues, may resort to criminal activities. The rise in crimes such as theft, assault, and drug trafficking has been noted as a consequence of this migration trend. This study aims to investigate the relationship between rural-urban migration and crime rates in Lokoja, exploring how migration patterns contribute to the social dynamics of urban crime in the area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the economic benefits that rural-urban migration can bring, it has also been associated with rising crime rates in urban centers. In Lokoja, the rapid influx of rural migrants has been linked to an increase in various criminal activities. However, there is limited research on how this migration specifically affects crime trends in Lokoja LGA. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the effects of rural-urban migration on urban crime rates in Lokoja, assessing the underlying factors that contribute to the increase in criminal activities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the impact of rural-urban migration on crime rates in Lokoja LGA.

  • To explore the socio-economic factors that contribute to crime among migrants in Lokoja.

  • To assess the role of migration policies in managing crime rates in urban areas like Lokoja.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does rural-urban migration influence crime rates in Lokoja LGA?

  • What socio-economic factors contribute to crime among rural-urban migrants in Lokoja LGA?

  • How effective are migration policies in controlling urban crime in Lokoja LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Rural-urban migration does not significantly influence crime rates in Lokoja LGA.

  • H₁: Rural-urban migration significantly influences crime rates in Lokoja LGA.

  • H₂: Socio-economic factors significantly contribute to crime among rural-urban migrants in Lokoja LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the relationship between rural-urban migration and crime in Lokoja, helping policymakers and urban planners design better migration policies. By understanding the socio-economic challenges faced by rural migrants, the study will offer recommendations on how to integrate migrants into urban societies in a way that reduces their involvement in criminal activities. This research will also contribute to the body of knowledge on urban crime prevention strategies in Nigerian cities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Lokoja LGA in Kogi State, specifically examining the relationship between rural-urban migration and urban crime rates in this area. The study will not extend to other urban centers in Kogi State or other regions of Nigeria. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing migrant populations and the reluctance of individuals to disclose their involvement in criminal activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of individuals from rural areas to urban centers in search of better opportunities.

  • Urban Crime Rates: The frequency of criminal activities such as theft, assault, and drug trafficking within an urban area.

  • Socio-Economic Factors: Economic and social conditions, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education, that may contribute to criminal behavior.
