ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine effective involvement of women in governance as a panacea to Nigeria socio-political and economic problems. Specifically, the study examined the nature of women’s involvement and participation in politics and government and effect on development in Ebonyi State. The study also, document the current scenario of Women’s participation in development in Ebonyi. The study Further, identify the economic disadvantages associated with the women failure to participate in government on Ebonyi state development in from 1999 - 2015. lastly the study make some suggestions that will enhance women’s participation in governance. The study employed the historical analysis research design. The findings revealed that Nigerian women have made significant and remarkable socio economic and political contribution to national development in the face of challenging circumstances. Also, the challenges before women are numerous, as they restrict women participation in politics, which is considered a major platform for Nigerian women to contribute meaningfully to national development. Furthermore, Nigerian women have shown to be qualified and competent to occupy political offices in the land, therefore the state and all relevant agencies should pursue enforcement of gender equality legislations, to address all forms of discrimination against women, for greater women participation in politics for national development. The study therefore recommends that government should devise means of recognizing the contributions of women to economic development of the State, especially the women in the rural communities who are engaged in farming, trading, weaving, agro-processing, child care among others. Also, education of women should be of paramount importance to any government in power because when you educate a woman you educate a society. And education will enable them hold positions without the feeling of inadequacy.
