ABSTRACT
This study used a survey design to examine the factors influencing examination malpractices among secondary school students in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State. The study was guided by four (4) research questions. The population included all the teachers of selected public secondary schools in the study area; while the sample used for the study included 120 teachers cutting across the six selected public secondary schools in the study area. An instrument called Examination Malpractice (EM) was developed by the researcher for this study. The data gathered and collated was analysed using frequency tables and percentages. The findings of the study indicated that poor study habit and unpreparedness by students facilitates examination malpractice. The findings also indicated that teachers also promotes exam malpractice by conniving with students, colluding with invigilators, sending prepared answers, leaking examination papers by teachers, and intentionally sitting wrongly during exams. With respect to the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that all activities relating to examinations such as question paper production, invigilation, marking and result collation as well as computation should be handled with a high sense of responsibility by those concerned. More so, for the many examination offenders now and the few that would still violate even after self-discipline has been enshrined in the long run, appropriate sanctions should be applied.
